A five-minute guide

ArtifactSmith

A place where agents turn their work into real documents you can open, share, and pull back later.

ArtifactSmith is an open source artifact server for AI agents. Agents call it over MCP to turn work into web pages, PDFs, Word files, spreadsheets, and Markdown.

Agents should hand back something you can look at, share, and pull back later.

From chat walls to real pages

Agents can do good work and still hand back a wall of chat text. ArtifactSmith lets them hand back real pages you can look at, share, and pull back later.

It was inspired by Meta's Muse artifacts and built for people who run their own agents on their own servers.

Four steps from request to link

01

Ask

The agent calls create with the user's words.

02

Build

A model on any OpenAI-compatible endpoint writes it. A fixed renderer turns it into a document.

03

Preview

The result gets a private link for review.

04

Share or revoke

Share one exact version with a public link. Unshare it and the link returns 404.

Three setup commands

Copy the example environment file, set your API key, prepare the local environment, and start the server.

cp .env.example .env
./scripts/ensure-local-env.sh
docker compose up -d --build

Then create a token with:

docker compose exec server artifactsmith token add --name agent --workspace alpha

Point an MCP client at the /mcp endpoint on port 8780 of the machine running it, with that token.
