artifactsmith in five minutes

ArtifactSmith turns an agent's work into real pages and files that people can look at, share, and pull back later.

open source artifact server for AI agents

01 / what-it-is

What it is

ArtifactSmith is an open source artifact server for AI agents. Agents call it over MCP to turn work into web pages, PDFs, Word files, spreadsheets, and Markdown.

Each artifact is versioned and stays private until shared.

02 / why-it-exists

Why it exists

Agents can do good work and then hand back a wall of chat text. ArtifactSmith lets them hand back real pages you can look at, share, and pull back later.

It was inspired by Meta's Muse artifacts and built for people who run their own agents on their own servers.

03 / how-it-works

How it works

step 01

Ask

The agent calls create with the user's words.

step 02

Build

A model on any OpenAI-compatible endpoint writes it. A fixed renderer turns it into a document.

step 03

Preview

Private link. Check the result before sharing it.

step 04

Share or revoke

A public link points to one exact version. Unshare makes it return 404.

04 / output-types

What it can make

  • web page
  • PDF
  • Word
  • Excel
  • Markdown
05 / agent-tools

The tools an agent gets

Tool What it does
createQueue a private build.
statusPoll or wait for the build status.
editCreate a new version from the latest version.
inspectRead the manifest, history, and share state.
list_artifactsShow the artifact catalog.
exportGet a download link valid for 15 minutes.
shareCreate a public link for one exact version.
unshareMake the shared version return 404.
revoke_previewsExpire private preview links.
deletePurge an artifact in two steps.
06 / safe-by-default

Safe by default

  • Builds stay private until shared.
  • Scripts are stripped.
  • Nothing loads from outside when a page opens. Outside images become links.
  • Private-network links are refused.
  • Tokens are scoped to one workspace with set permissions.
  • No usage data is sent anywhere.
07 / quickstart

Try it in three commands

$ cp .env.example .env $ ./scripts/ensure-local-env.sh $ docker compose up -d --build

Set your API key in .env. Then create a token:

$ docker compose exec server artifactsmith token add --name agent --workspace alpha

Point an MCP client at the /mcp endpoint on port 8780 of the machine running it, with that token.
